India And The People

It seems as if most people in our country have taken to heart and imbibed the three ‘golden’ words in our lives today- “LIFE GOES ON”. Stuff happens, calamities take place, incidents shock the world, livelihoods are lost but among all that, life goes on invariably for most people. India is no exception. Instead, it is an epitome of the above mentioned sentiment.

In our country, the world’s second largest population, which is soon to be first, people live all their days with the belief that as it has been running all these years, the country will run itself. But reading the newspaper of just a single day gave me a serious case of blues as I sat wondering, ‘are we so unconcerned because we are unaware or are we just plain lazy?’

While on one side we had our very own successful Indian Mars mission, on the other hand the biggest crime fighting organisation in our country, the CBI was declared unconstitutional. On one side the Supreme Court allowed the “none of the above” option on the voter ballot form, for the voters to reject all unworthy candidates, on the other hand we have our very own CBI Director providing comparisons such as “If you cannot enforce the ban on betting, it is like saying, ‘If you can’t prevent rape, you enjoy it”, which are beyond offending the sentiments of any person, let alone half the population of the country.

To top it all off, we have the economy, which the common man understands neither head nor tails of, except for the fact that tomato prices have followed onion into the 100 rs./kg club and petrol is reaffirming its name as liquid ‘gold’ every passing month. But as they say, save the biggest for the last. So have I saved the biggest if not the most vital news for discussion at the last, and that is the ever looming Elections 2014. What will happen? Who will win? Those are the questions being discussed. Every party leader is busy in election campaigns. But what exasperates me is the fact that none, absolutely none of them are talking about what we can rightly demand from them as the citizens of the country if they win. Rather, each leader is busy critiquing the other parties and airing their dirty laundry in public, to the extent that it is shameful not to mention that they invariable embarrass themselves showing their lack of knowledge of history, if not their disturbingly absent PR skills.

All this and more leads me to believe how frustrating it must be for those who don’t comprehend what actually is happening, for those who can’t do anything about anything, which category includes most of our nation’s massive population. To them I say – Wake up! Wake up and realize the stinking bare truth of our nation’s condition. Wake up realize the dangerous precipice our nation is at- morally and culturally, if not economically. Wake up and see the condition of the people in our country who are your brothers and sisters. Wake up and leave the biggest evil of our nation- cynicism behind. For the words ‘yeh sab chalta hai’ and ‘nothing is ever going to change’ are slowly poisoning our country. Wake up and realize your power and more than that, your duty, to provide those fellow 1.2 billion people with a better government, with a nation which is better than the ‘India’ of the present. Wake up and VOTE, because the question everyone should be asking is not who will win or what will happen. Rather it “who will you vote for?”
